The issue of South African citizenship has become a political hot potato. The Public Protector’s recent report relating to the granting of citizenship to members of the Gupta family, implicating the previous Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, has raised the issue of erroneous or the corrupt issuance of South African citizenship. In this interview with Stephen Grootes on The Pulse, Gary Eisenberg attempts to explain differences between the refusal to grant passport documents by the Department of Home Affairs, and the deprivation of citizenship on the basis of erroneous issuance.
